The trial of Ray Charles on possession of heroin is set to begin in Indianapolis. Charles' attorney moves to have the charges dismissed. The case is bound over until January 30.
January 5
Connie Francis postpones signing her contract renewal with M-G-M because she is sick. She'll sign the contract on January 8. The new five-year contract, which guarantees her a minimum of $100,000 a year, ensures Francis at least one film role a year with Metro-Goldwyn -Mayer Pictures, the parent company of M-G-M Records.
January 6
Bobby Vee hosts a March of Dimes benefit show in Houston, Texas.
Early January
The Marcels recently appeared at the Gateway Theater in their hometown of Pittsburgh to promote the opening of the movie "Twist Around the Clock" in which they have a cameo singing role.
The Flairs are booked for the month at the Bayou Club in Atlanta.

January 27
At the Cow Palace in San Francisco, Chubby Checker headlines a hugely successful one-nighter. Among the many acts appearing are Jan and Dean, Bobby Freeman, Dick and Dee Dee and the Untouchables. An estimated 15,000 fans pay $44,800 for their tickets
January 28
Johnny Tillotson leaves the United States for a long tour of the Far East. He will play theaters in Tokyo, Hong Kong and Manila.

Bobby Rydell begins a two-day stay in Hong Kong, he is the first American "name singer" to appear in the British colony, and his short stay is a big success.
On television this afternoon, Jackie Wilson sings "The Greatest Hurt" on American Bandstand. Afterwards, he opens at Sciolla's Supper Club in Philadelphia through February 3.
January 30
In Indianapolis, Ray Charles is in court to hear a local judge drop all the charges against him that resulted in his arrest on November 14. Tthe judge ruled that the search of Charles' hotel room violated his constitutional rights. The action took five minutes and Charles did not actively participate.
January 31
Bobby Rydell visits Japan where he is booked for four days at the New Latin Quarter in Tokyo.
Afterwards, Rydell has more concerts in Europe, including six days in West Germany.
On ABC-TV this afternoon, young actor Johnny Crawford is the musical guest on American Bandstand.Late January
Bobby Vee sets out on a two-moth tour of Europe. The first leg includes shows in Scandinavia including Stockholm, Helsinki and Amsterdam. In Copenhagen Vee upsets the press by arriving a half hour late for his own press conference.
Gene Pitney is touring Europe. His first stop is Italy where he will record an Italian version of "Town Without Pity" as well as appear on a television program.

Don and Juan make a rare television appearance as the perform "What's Your Name" on ABC-TV's American Bandstand.
February 2
LaVern Baker begins a seventeen-day tour of U.S. military bases in Europe. While she is gone, she will visit Germany, Italy, Spain and France.

Joey Dee and the Starliters are making a swing through the heart of the country. After closing their gig at the Crescendo in Hollywood, tonight they play the Zebra Lounge in Oklahoma City. This is followed by a pair of shows in Tulsa on February15, at Continental Skating Rink and the Cimarron Ballroom. Other dates include Chanute, Kansas (16) and Danceland in Cedar Rapids, Iowa (17).
This afternoon, Eddie Holland makes his television debut as he sings :Jamie" on America Bandstand.

Brenda Lee spends ten days in a Nashville hospital recuperating
from a neck sprain. Later in the year, on June 13, she will
aggravate this injury again.
February 16
Paul Anka departs for the States to begin his first World Tour. The opening leg of the tour will run six weeks, and he is set to perform in the capital cities of Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, England, France, Spain, Italy and West Germany. Eventually the tour will cover six continents.
Starting a week-long engagement at the Apollo Theater in New York are Bobby Bland, Erma Franklin, the Edsels, the Crystals, the Corsairs and the Sensations.
February 18
Dressed in their Marine uniforms, the Everly brothers take advantage of a brief leave to make an appearance on the "Ed Sullivan Show" where they sing "Crying in the Rain."
February 19
Chuck Berry begins his three-year sentence for violation of the Mann Act in conjunction with transporting an Apache waitress from El Paso to St. Louis. For the next two months, he will be housed at the Federal Penal Institution near Terre Haute, Indiana.
In Boston, Frankie Avalon opens at Blinstrub's, where he is booked through February 25.
Brook Benton is set for Freddie's Club in Minneapolis through February 28. Opening night, a blizzard kept the crowd small.
Marvin Rainwater stop by American Bandstand to rock the teens with "Tough Top Cat."
February 20
Remaining in Florida, where has been booked since December, Louis Jordan opens at the Singapore Hotel in Miami Beach. Jordan remains there until March 11.
The guests on American Bandstand today are Joey Dee and the Starliters who sing "Peppermint Twist" and "Hey, Let's Twist."
February 22
Picking up their tour where they left off on February 17, Joey Dee and the Starliters perform in Kingston, Ontario tonight. Other dates are the Coliseum in Ottawa (23); the Town and Country Lounge in Brooklyn, New York (24-25).

However, they also accepted the chance to tour Australia for which they will be paid $20,000 for less than a week's work. Consequently, they will be play only two days of the Twin Coaches gig, leave for the far East immediately after tomorrow's show.
Brenda Lee is the opening act act for comedian Jack Carter during a ten-day run in the Cassandra room in Deauville Hotel in Miami.
March 18
After four months in Florida, Louis Jordan ventures north to play the Latin Casino near Philadelphia for the next four weeks.

Jackie DeShannon bows into the Horizon Room in Pittsburgh for a week-long booking. DeShannon has just returned from her first tour of England where she appeared at various theaters over a four week period.
On TV today, Jo Ann Campbell makes one of her frequent guest stops on American Bandstand.
For the near future, DeShannon (a.k.a. Jackie Dee and Jackie Lee) will concentrate on song writing with Sharon Sheely, a close friend of the late singer Eddie Cochran.
March 22
Taking advantage of the school spring holiday season, Chubby Checker opens at the Copacabana in New York City. Checker's Copa debut had originally been scheduled or June 1962, but was moved back to March to capitalize on the Twist craze. Checker had been schedule to make his first appearance in the Big Apple at the Peppermint Lounge but opted "uptown" to the Copa.
The Al Casey Combo performs "Cookin'" on this afternoon's American Bandstand.
March 23

After the charges against Ray Charles were dropped, Southern Methodist University in Dallas reconsidered its action in canceling his engagement the past December 9. Charles rebooked and tonight he draws 9.000 to the 6,000 seat Coliseum at SMU.
Late March
Filming begins on Elvis Presley's latest
sing-a-thon/travelogue "Girls! Girls! Girls!" for
Paramount Studios. Although the film's setting is in Hawaii, the
Island State is is never mentioned by name, and the story could
of been set in any seaport. Elvis is on location in Hawaii for
about two weeks beginning April 7.
It is reported in the music press that Joey Dee will film
"Oliver Twist" during April and May. The film was never
made.
Frankie Avalon was also reported to making a movie at the time
titled "Survival." Later in the year when the film was
release, the title is changed is changed to the more colorful
"Panic In the Year Zero."
Chubby Checker appears on a closed-circuit television spectacular
tentatively called the Twist Party" to be aired from Seattle
World's Fair. which opens in April.

April 9
The ill fated "Twist Spectacular" tour is launched in Baltimore. Headliners are Chubby Checker, Joey Dee and the Staliters. Others on the bill are Gary U.S. Bonds, Dee Dee Sharp, Linda Scott, Danny and the Juniors, the Dovells, the Carroll Brothers and Bobby Gregg and his Friends. The tour is scheduled to run three weeks and make stops in major cities, One of the problems is the tour's schedule. The distances between show dates average a half a continent. From Baltimore the troupe travels to Miami for appearances on April 13. This is followed by dates in St. Louis, then on to Los Angeles for a show on April 18, where ticket sales bring in $7, 500 while it costs $6,000 to lease the Pan Pacific Auditorium.
Bill Haley and His comets are booked into the Terrazzo Cafe in Mexico City through April 19. While in Mexico, the group will appear in eight television films and record two albums for Orfeon Records, a local label, prior to leaving on an extended tour of South America.

On TV this afternoon, American Bandstand is visited by Neil Sedaka who sings "King of Clowns" for the teens.
"State Fair" opens in movie theaters across the country. The film stars Bobby Darin, Ann Margret, Pat Boone and non-singer Pamela Tiffin.
April 15
Donnie Brooks is guest on Ed Sullivan's CBS-TV show.
Mid-April
Wanda Jackson completes a two-week stay at the Commercial Hotel in Elko, Nevada.
Billy Ward and his Dominoes are playing a three-week gig at the Carnival Club in Phoenix.
Hollywood sources report that Duane Eddy will film "Broken Lariat" for Columbia Pictures. In 1962, Eddy did star in "The Wild Westerners" from Four Leaf Productions, but "Broken Lance" does not appear to have been made.
April 18
Jay and the Americans open at the Camelot in New York City. After a week they are booked for weekend record hops until high school is out for the summer.
April 19
Performances of the "Twist Spectacular" at the Civic Auditorium in San Francisco are canceled after several checks from the promoter bounce. On April 20-21 the performers are in Seattle at the Orpheum Theater but the show in now $50,000 in debt. The only act that has been paid is Joey Dee and the Starliters, which was getting $1250 a night. Gary U.S Bonds has dropped out temporarily,. In Seattle Chubby Checker, who was guaranteed $5,000 a night, and his manager take over the operation of the tour in an attempt to salvage something for the performers.

With a performance at the Municipal Auditorium in Norfolk, Virginia, Fats Domino and Brook Benton begins a thirty-day tour that will visit twenty four cities.
April 20
As part of a three-day stay in England, Neil Sedaka plays the London Palladium show with British singer Adam Faith. this show is followed by dates in Manchester (21) and Liverpool (22).
Jerry Butler fronts the review at the Chicago Regal Theater, Others appearing are the Miracles, the Marvelettes, Ben E. King, Maxine Brown and Betty Everett.
At the Apollo Theater for the next week, the entertainers are Chuck Jackson, Tommy Hunt, the Vibrations, the Chantels, Ronnie and the Hi-Lites and the Doc Bagby combo.

April 21
The Platters are currently in the middle of a tour that will take them behind the Iron Curtain. Tonight through April 28, they are in Milan, Italy.
Billed as "Rock 'n' Twist - USA" package, Johnny Burnette, Gary U.S. Bonds, and Gene McDaniels begins a tour of the British Isles with a show tonight at St. Andrew's Hall in Glasgow, Scotland. They will continue to criss-cross Great Britain for the next three weeks.
The Upsetters, previously Little Richard's touring band, are booked for a long engagement at New York City's Peppermint Lounge.

The Untouchables from Philadelphia, along with the Checkmates from Fort Wayne, Indiana, begin a long run in the lounge of the Fremont Hotel in Las Vegas.

April 27
The Etta James revue performs in Pittsburgh. Appearing with James are the Corsairs, Arthur Alexander and several lesser known performers.

Less than a week after his son was buried back home in Louisiana, Jerry Lee Lewis arrives in London to begin a tour of England.

In Nashville, Sam Cooke is a no-show for the afternoon performance of a revue featuring Solomon Burke, Ral Donner, the Drifters, the Sensations, B.B. King, and Barbara George. Six hundred patrons ask for a refund of their tickets and the promoters lose money on the show. Cooke did appear at the evening performance, but by then the word is out that he wasn't going to appear at all. When he did arrive, he was reportedly only on stage for five minutes.

Tomorrow the "Twist Spectacular" plays two different locations after an afternoon performance at the 10,000 seat auditorium in St. Paul and an evening concert at the 8,000 seat Auditorium in Minneapolis. On tickets priced from $2.75, the show grosses only $2, 900 in St. Paul and $4,400 in Minneapolis.

Leaving Italy, the Platters begin a ten days in Spain, after which, they will be the first U.S. rock 'n' roll act to appear in a Communist country as they perform several times in Poland in mid-May. After this, they will be in London for a couple of television performances.

A rumor began two weeks earlier in Los Angeles is now nationwide, Sam Cooke is suffering from an incurable disease! Cooke didn't have leukemia as was being reported -- and the rumor slowly faded out, but not without leaving a shaken Cooke.
Johnny Tillotson is discharged from the U.S. Army Reserves where he has spent the last six months on active duty. He is set to go tour the Midwest starting in Michigan at Sault Ste Marie, Escanaba, and Custer, before moving on to cities in Ohio, Indiana and Iowa.
Reports from Hollywood say that Frankie Avalon has just finished shooting "Valley of Swords "in Spain is off to make a movie in Italy, If Avalon makes any movies in Italy they were never released in the United States.

In Houston, Texas. Jackie Wilson is a no-show at the City Auditorium. It is a segregated all-black audience and there are 3,500 fans on hand for the show and dance. When the announcer does his job by informing the crowd, he is hit on the head with a bottle. It takes thirty police officers and a K-9 unit to quell the riot. Wilson was set to receive a $2,000 guarantee plus 50% of the ticket sales over $4,750. The gate was approaching $10,000 when the trouble started. Wilson's fee will go to cover damages.

In Milwaukee, Bobby Vinton, along with local band the Legends, perform on the debut of a local teen-oriented television program, "Twelve to Twenty." The show will be broadcast on Saturday afternoons over WTJM-TV.

The Evely Brothers are scheduled to arrive in England, but only Phil makes the flight. Don arrives the next afternoon after missing the flight. It is apparent to all that see him that he is not physically well.

In England, Little Richard headlines a spectacular show at the Tower Ballroom in Brighton that includes such lesser-known acts such as the Beatles and Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas. Remaining venues on the tour include the Hippodrome Theater in Brighton and the Granada Theater in Mansfield.
Also in England, the Everly Brothers' scheduled tour is in jeopardy of not getting off the ground. Don Everly collapses during a rehearsal at the Prince of Wales Theater in London and is rushed to the Charring Cross Hospital. After a few hours, he checks himself out.

Only the fact that Charles is viewed as a hero in Jamaica is a nasty scene averted.
